One of the more common types of
scholarships are known as
textbook scholarships. The use of
textbooks is necessary in furthering a student’s education. However,
the price of textbooks continue to rise each year
which makes it difficult for some students who lack funds to
purchase them. Textbooks account for 72 percent of the students’
total fees in community colleges, while they account for around 26
percent at universities with four-year courses. Students who take
multiple credits are sometimes spending more on textbooks than
on class fees.
So
textbook scholarships were
developed to help students pay for the high cost of textbooks that
they need for their classes.
Schools do set certain standards and qualifications before a student
can qualify. Colleges generally provide the scholarship to students
who are hard-working and deserving of a financial award. So there is
usually an application process to ensure that the students who
receive the scholarship are deserving of it.
A student is required to be enrolled
in the college or university that offers the scholarship. He or she
is also expected to have completed a certain number of college credits
(not always though) to be accepted as an applicant. The applicant is also expected
to meet a certain GPA in the preceding semester. Upon receiving all
scholarship applications for textbooks, a scholarship committee will
review them and then choose the students who fit their requirements.
The scholarship grant may or may not fully shoulder the textbook
expenses of a student. Most universities pay a percentage of the
total textbook expenditures of a qualified recipient. But even that
can amount to hundreds of dollars due to the high cost of textbooks.
Another way to get
textbook scholarships are through
winning bookstore contests and applying online. Some bookstores who
want to aid students in the purchase of their textbooks come up with
contests in which winners of the competition will be granted a
voucher that can be used to purchase books. These contests are
normally essay-writing that require a student to write an article
about a particular topic. Entries are submitted to the bookstore
before a set deadline.
And finally, you can also apply for a textbook scholarship online. A
lot of online scholarship programs are being offered these days to
help students acquire financial assistance. This applies to not only
textbook assistance, but tuition and educational living expenses as
well.
